Welcome to the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department
Established in 1899, the Kingwood Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) serves the community from its base in Kingwood, West Virginia. As the heart of Preston County, Kingwood spans an area of 2.4 square miles and is home to approximately 3,200 residents. The KVFD’s responsibility extends beyond the city limits to include the surrounding areas of Manown, Preston, Howesville, and Caddell Mountain, covering a total of 54 square miles and supporting a combined population of 5,200.
The majority of the KVFD's coverage area is rural, with some regions lacking fire hydrants, which presents unique challenges for fire safety and emergency response. KVFD is integral to the protection of critical local infrastructure and facilities, including Matthews Bronze, Preston Memorial Hospital, Appalachian Wood Pellets, Preston High School, and Camp Dawson.
Three major routes—Rt. 7, Rt. 26, and Rt. 72—traverse the KVFD's jurisdiction, and the Cheat River also flows through this region, adding natural beauty but also potential risk factors that require vigilant monitoring. The department also collaborates closely with the Preston County Hazards Incident Response Team (HIRT), Company 30, which convenes and stores equipment at the KVFD station.
Here at Company 5, we are equipped and trained to handle many types of calls aside from just fighting fires, including but not limited to: Motor Vehicle/ATV Collisions, Technical Rescues (such as Rope Rescues, Heavy Extrications, Trench Rescues, Equipment/Machinery Rescues, and Confined Space Rescues) HazMat Situations, Search and Rescue, and Hazardous Conditions. We are equipped/trained to assist other departments throughout the county in other areas, such as Underwater Rescue/Recovery, Swift Water Rescues, Animal Rescues, Structural Collapse, and more. We strive to be able to serve our community and the surrounding areas to help out those in need, in as many fields of assistance as we can train and prepare for.
In addition to its own services, KVFD works in coordination with 11 other fire departments in Preston County, 5 ambulance squads, and Company 17, the County Dive Team, ensuring comprehensive emergency response capabilities throughout the region.
